So I've seen The Avengers twice now - once in 3D with J, once in 2D with branquignole. It's great! I thought I ought to write something about it before it comes out in America tomorrow lol. It's been really nice having something first for once!

Basically, it gave me crazy feels that it was hard to make coherent, and I really really liked it (hence going to see it twice in 4 days!) which is good because can you imagine how much it was would sucked if it, well, sucked? It's only been like 4 years of build up god.

Spoilers for The Avengers! )

What did you guys think?

I don't rec things often, but I just read two very, very good fics, the kind of long and excellent and deeply satisfying fics you bask in for a while afterwards and then want to tell absolutely everyone about, so. Recs. Both for Sherlock, canon compliant for all of series 2, and delightfully long.

An Avalanche of Detour Signs by gyzym

Title: An Avalanche of Detour Signs
Author : Gyzym
Pairing: Molly Hooper/Greg Lestrade [Molly Hooper/Jim Moriarty, unrequited Molly Hooper/Sherlock Holmes]
Rating: R
Wordcount: 56,053
Warnings: This fic covers the entirety of Molly’s experience for both seasons of Sherlock, and thus deals with the aftermath of her relationship with Jim Moriarty. As such, there are some sexual trauma themes in this story; if, for your own self-care, that is not the kind of thing you should be reading, please give this story a pass.
Summary: In which Molly Hooper gets a job, gets a degree, breaks a heart, has her heart broken, falls in love, keeps a secret, saves a life, runs a morgue, falls apart, pulls it together, and finds exactly what she didn’t know she was looking for—not necessarily in that order.

I love Molly, and I ship Molly/Lestrade, so I jumped at this fic with a ravenous hunger. Aside from the occasionally missed Americanism issue, it is flawless, and all that is easily, embarassingly forgiven because it is amazing, actually fucking superb.

And here’s the thing: I think it is properly definitive for me. I am mildly concerned that I may not want or need or desire any other Molly fic ever again, so wondrously excellent is this. It’s so good, and it spans so much, it covers everything so well and so completely that I am left totally and utterly satisfied.

The Lestrade stuff, and the Sherlock stuff, and the Sally stuff, and Mrs Hudson and omg Mycroft - all of that is flawless and brilliant, detailed and thoughtful and insightful, but of course, knowing me, what really stood out as take-your-breath-away this-fic-is-something-else was the Moriarty stuff. Holy shit. It’s all so subtle and it feels incredibly realistic and believable; the most enduringly scary Moriarty I’ve encountered in fic and that’s because of how far reaching his presence is and the reactions he inspires in the others, in Molly and Lestrade. The unease, fear and horror were palpable.

Molly and Lestrade by the way, who are just heart achingly, heart breakingly lovely and adorable and struggling and trying and just so, so good.

Really excellent writing. I adored this whole heartedly. Go read it.

The Sensation of Falling Just As You Hit Sleep by greywash

Title: The Sensation of Falling Just As You Hit Sleep
Author: greywash
Rating: R
Wordcount: 82,819
Pairing: main Sherlock/John, also some John/OFC het, some other relationships mentioned
Warnings: Author warns for disturbing content only;
Isi says there is nothing particularly disturbing about the content IMO
Summary: Love is a much more vicious motivator.

This fic is set immediately post-Reichenbach, and is primarily a mixture of angst and action. It follows Sherlock and John through the aftermath of Reichenbach, and it is brilliant. Just brilliant. It's plot driven like the show, and has a nice ensemble feel I like - lots of Molly, lots of Mycroft, Harry Watson, Mike Stamford and Greg Lestrade, and some OFCs and members of Moriarty's organisation. There are some beautifully heart felt moments, and some heart stopping plot twists, and I just loved it lots and lots and lots. Read it!

So I'm still wandering around in a Sherlock squee haze, and I just have to get this off my chest. Yes, I love Sherlock, and John, and their married life together. Yes, I adore asexual Sherlock. Both of these things are beautiful and glorious and perfect.

But want I need is to roll around in absolutely filthy and completely heartbreaking Sherlock/Moriarty.

Andrew Scott's Moriarty is so hot it makes me want to strangle something.

Andrew Scott's Moriarty is so hot it makes me want to not just tear my clothes off, but to maybe tear my face off.

Andrew Scott's Moriarty is so hot it makes me want to writhe around, shameless and incoherent with want.

And I know, I know, at the end of the last series the majority of fans were not Moriarty worshippers like me, but come on, there is no way in a fandom as big and as active as this one that I am the only one frantically panting after Moriarty.

Obviously, Sherlock/Moriarty would never be the main pairing, but it boggles the mind that it isn't like, the secondary slash ship. There should be some kind of small but active corner of the fandom devoted to the agonising hotness of Moriarty and all the loving and depraved things he wants to do to Sherlock. WHERE. WHERE IS IT. AM I LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACES?? BECAUSE I AM NOT FINDING IT.

I have found a handful of fics. Delicious, precious fics.

But I am not kidding when I say I have seen more people shipping Mycroft/Lestrade. Mycroft/Lestrade. WHAT IS THIS FUCKERY??

I am actually being driven out of my mind.

Hi, internet!

I just got back from spending the weekend in France, and in the days preceding that I had Glee, a picnic, punting and Pimms trip... it is a busy time! pretty knackered right now, but DARREN CRISS ON WEDNESDAY OMG OMG.

Yay :D

Lal asked me these questions:

1. How did you discover fandom?
2. What do you want from S3 of Glee?
3. What fictional character do you most identify with?
4. Can you convince me why ~TDS SHIPPING SPOILER~ is endgame?
5. Where in the world would you like to live, if you live anywhere?

So if you didn't already know, Lev Grossman, the guy that wrote The Magicians, also writes for Time magazine (apparently wrote the Zuckerberg profile) and is apparently going to be doing a piece on fanfiction. He has set up an LJ comm called lg-interview which he says he intends to use to have a conversation with fanfiction writers. It hasn't really started yet, and remembering SurveyFail I am pretty cautious about such things now, but I'm also curious and remain hopeful that it won't devolve into fail and wank but might lead to IDK, interesting civil discussion.

Or if it does devolve into fail and wank I'd like to be able to watch from the inside anyway.

Man I hope nothing awful happens that would ruin my enjoyment of The Magicians and it's upcoming sequel The Magician King. I adored that book. Please, Lev Grossman, don't crash and burn and ruin my enjoyment of your work. Please.

So yeah. Maybe some of you guys might also like to check it out.

OMG TOMORROW I GO TO SEE GLEE LIVE OMG.

Something on Twitter sent me running to the inbox that still gets all my FFN alerts and many other mailing list stuff. While I was there, I saw a new review. For a fic I haven't update in 5 years, or whatever it is now. 6 months ago, I would have smiled and shook my head, knowing I'd never write the next chapter of that fic.

But I started writing for TSN the other day, and it's nothing yet, but guys it feels nice. Really nice. I've basically only been writing / thinking about in creative terms original stuff for the last couple of years really. And I love it, and it's amazing. But I think I forgot how much I actually enjoy writing other stuff too, and it's lovely to write something different. Completely different, different style, pace and of course characters doing different things. (There will never be emails about grammar in my original, I doubt.)

And then I see this review, and a little bit of me is all, eh, why not?

OK, I'm not going to suddenly write that fic again, I know that about myself. But even so, somehow it doesn't feel so far away anymore.

I  was thinking the other day about how when I  first found fic, there was a while when I only read and wrote for two fandoms, and then there was a long while when I  was happily flitting around lots, many lots. And then about a year and a half ago I started getting strongly sucked into one at a time, obsess a lot more than about anything else, and then fall out of them nearly completely when something else sucked me in.

It's kinda weird. I think there's some kind of correlation with RPF too, because I tend to fall faster and harder into their fandoms but then pick myself up and move on faster too. Whereas for TV shows you watch them over a long period of time and I at least spend a lot of time thinking about writing and plot and character development and stuff that just doesn't apply in RPF. Books stick the most, but irregularly. Books are different creatures entirely, I sometimes think.

It always seems to be the fictional characters fic and fandoms I turn to for comfort.

This post doesn't really have a point. I am wistful.

So I am now totally and utterly obsessed by TSN fandom, specifically Mark/Eduardo, and have been reading reams and reams of fic with almost an air of determination like I can burn it onto my retinas or something and then I will be happy. The whole fictional characters/rpf/actors rpf/actors shipping their characters thing is slightly mind bending when I stop to think about it, but generally there has been little pause over the last, IDK, week. I don't want to stop, why would I want to stop.

I blame Lal.

It really is Lal's fault, because she linked me to it and then I became addicted, and then like the wonderful enabler she is I went to her house and we watched the movie and she gave me recs and basically she is the best and I am highly indebted to her.

Haven't had a new fandom in a while. It feels good. Really good.

Also, it occurs to me that I spent YEARS reading HP fic and I don't think I ever read one where someone got turned into a plant. Whereas, like, the fifth fic about non-magical geeks in love covers that. And very beautifully. What even.

Oh yeah, so I went to The North )

Anyway, I had a very fun time for which I am very appreciative :D Thanks guys!

My Hay tickets arrived, and so did my Much Ado tickets. Excitement!

Tomorrow I'm going to Devon for two weeks, where internet access can be negotiated but is generally intermittent. Doctor Who will start again! Freaking finally. Also, Easter and the Royal Wedding will happen, fun. Books! Clotted cream! Countryside!

It's pathetic how tired doing a few hours of actual work makes me. I am so soft D: And also, easily frustrated in the gaps between stimulation, although luckily only internally. At least, I hope so. Thursday night, I got in and only stayed awake because I was starving and needed food.

RL goings on )

If you are on my flist, you probably like books and reading, at least a little, and talking to other fandom-y people. These are all excellent things! Perhaps you, then, would like to join bookdeyada_club, which despite having a user account instead of a community one is in fact an LJ based book club for fannish minded people. We read books, and then we talk about them. Fun, right?

If you join there's no pressure to read every book if you are being too busy or if you just don't want to that time, and anyone can nominate a book from any genre (except, I think they do have to be fiction?) which we vote for. If your book doesn't get picked the first time it is nominated, you can always nominate it again. We're all very friendly and discussion topics can be on anything - from feminism to delicious slashiness. We all come from a fandom background, which I think is great because it means we can discuss books using fandom and internet language if we want to, which I at least would so not be comfortable at a book club based at my local library or whatever.

So, if there's a book you've read recently that you think deserves to be read and discussed by more people, or if you would like some more book recs, or even if you like reading but realise you can't remember the last time you read an actual new book. Come meet likewise people at bookdeyada_club!

edited now it actually is a comm! Come join!

I said this fandom was gonna rock! )

Cool meme snagged from Jenni.

SIX PAIRINGS I LIKE: Frankly, six just isn't enough, so I've gone only one from a fandom. Except Doctor Who/Torchwood because its too awesome to be constrained.

1. Ten!Doctor/Simm!Master Theta/Koschei (Doctor Who)
2. Jack/John (Torchwood) I am investing in this pairing, due to the mindblowing hotness and awesomeness. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
3. House/Chase (House)
4. Harry/Voldemort (Harry Potter)
5. Picard/Q (Startrek TNG)
6. Ronon/Kavanaugh (Stargate Atlantis)

THREE SHIPS I'VE ABANDONED:

7. Artemis/Holly (Artemis Fowl)
8. Harry/Hermione (Harry Potter)
9. Nick/Greg (CSI)

THREE SHIPS I'VE NEVER LIKED:

10. Guy/Marian (Robin Hood)
11. Harry/Cho (Harry Potter)
12. Gwen/Owen (Torchwood)

TWO SHIPS THAT HAVE PIQUED MY INTEREST:

13. Jack/Yvonne (Doctor Who/Torchwood)
14. Jack/Sarah Jane (Doctor Who/Torchwood/Sarah Jane Adventures)

She's only gone and given us the title for the last book. I'm so excited, and yet I'm also totally terrified. She'll probably release on 7/7/7 like we have all expected her to. God. Its coming to an end, its all coming to an end...

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"

Oh god.

Scrap that- I'm so terrified I keep forgetting to feel excited.

It wouldn't be nearly so bad if I wasn't totally convinced that, one way or another, Harry is going to die.

Oh god.
