Casting for the Eleventh Doctor

They're announcing the casting for the 11th Doctor tomorrow.
Ack, it's way too soon! I know they said they'd announce in the New Year, but day three? Argh. I'd hoped it would be closer to the specials. And, I can't help feeling like they mainly want to announce early to avoid it being leaked. But still. Especially since RTD was so irritated about Eccelsons leaving being leaked... well.
OK, first of all, I so so do not want the 11th Doctor to be female.
This is because the Doctor is male.
The Master is male. The Rani, on the other hand, is female. If the want a female Timelord, the can have a female Timelord.
THEY ALREADY HAVE A FEMALE TIMELORD.
BRING BACK THE RANI. Which, I think they'll do anyway. They even have The Doctor's Daughter, Jenny, still knocking about for god's sake.
This isn't about sex appeal. I would be perfectly happy if the had another kinda old Doctor. In fact, that would be totally fine. The thing is, whoever the 11th Doctor is, the can't try to out-David David, they have to do something new. And yes, I realise that this might be a reason for a female Doctor, but I don't agree with that at all. It just doesn't make sense.
I keep thinking of when it came out that Doctor Who was being written by RTD and there as some speculation-- and worry-- that he would make the Doctor gay. And instead, they introduced Captain Jack, killing two birds with one very attractive stone. And it was such a neat answer.
So again, if they want a female Timelord, they already have ONE. I'm totally up for a female Master even, and his ring was picked up by an apparently female hand. But a female Doctor? I'm so not sold. I just don't think there's any reason for it, and really hope the don't go there and mess with everything.
Also, I don't really want a black Doctor. This isn't so much because I don't think it could work, but because I think by having the first black Doctor it would constantly be "the first black Doctor". It would only concentrate on the fact that all the previous Doctors weren't white, and would probably undermine the 11th Doctor's performance. I don't want 11, even if they turn out to be complete rubbish, to be reduced to being "the first black Doctor".
I mean, I would much prefer a black male Doctor to a white female Doctor, but still. And just for the record, I am totally cool if they want to cast a ginger.
I am a little worried though. Mainly because last time around I already loved David so much and his casting to replace Eccelson was just so so perfect. And this time around, there isn't anyone in particular that I have lined up, that I favour or would prefer or anything. And also because Stephen Moffat is such a great writer I don't want him to have a Doctor that isn't good enough for him, for his scripts, for me, for the show. I really want Doctor Who to continue to be an amazing show. I know I should trust them to make it good no matter what, but I'm anxious.
It's weird. I've come to terms with David leaving, but not quite with him being replaced yet.
*crosses fingers* Please don't disappoint me...

Date: 2009-01-03 12:25 am (UTC)Let me say this... I absolutely LOVE David Tennant. In fact, when the penultimate episode aired and it looked like he was regenerating, I was very very anxious over it. At that point, I wasn't ready for him to go. But then, I had the summer to mull it over.
My view is this... if the new Doctor is of the same calibur as David Morrissey, I'm sooo ready for the end of Ten. There was too much romance in Ten's cycle... also, with someone as young and as unmarried as David Tennant, interest in his personal life sometimes overshadowed the show. I'm ready for the next Doctor to be more like a cool but goofy uncle.
Then again, if it's any of the names that are being bandied about in the articles, I will really really really really miss David Tennant. It should be someone like John Hannah or... Jimmy Mistry (though, he might have too much of the Tennant hearthrob factor).
Too bad Damian O'Hare's on "The Royal" because I'd love to see him as the ginger Doctor. (But again, too much *heartthrob.*)

Date: 2009-01-03 08:12 am (UTC)I had hoped that Ten would have one more full series after the specials because I really wanted to see him and the Moff, but realistically I didn't really expect that, I just hoped a lot. Again, I think I've come to terms with David leaving and the end of Ten, but have not yet come to terms with the idea of him being replaced and the beginning of Eleven. Also, I am torn between hoping they freaking sign the actor for a decent amount of time (assuming its good) or not (fearing they won't be).
I don't think there was too much romance in Ten's cycle, though I think the fandom exacerbated it and the sheer attractiveness of David Tennant probably added to it also. But I am ready for a new Doctor to have less romance. Hopefully because they have an older actor.
Goofy uncle would be spot on. Possibly more alien, maybe slightly embarrassing socially but awesome when you need him. That would be a nice change.

Date: 2009-01-03 02:36 pm (UTC)I really did think that it was rather exasperating seeing Rose and Martha pine after him... And then Madame du Pompadour, that one woman when he hid his essence in the watch, John Simm's Master, Kylie Minogue, River Song... it was all just too much for me. In fact, River Song was kinda the last straw for me--- though, I was resigned to it and saw a purpose for it when I thought that David Morrissey was Eleven.
I still insist that the new Doctor should be a goofy uncle, but I have a feeling that they still want someone relatively young. (Or younger than 45, at least.) I think that could be achieved with someone like Richard Coyle, but I don't think that he and Steven Moffatt could work together again... I don't think that the Moff could trust him to stick around.
Here I go again, waxing on and off about The Doctor... I guess I'm just anxious to hear who Eleven will be.

Date: 2009-01-03 07:46 am (UTC)Also, can you imagine the wank between 10 fangirls and 11 fangirls if 11 is really hot? It would be epic. Hmmm... I'll bring the popcorn.
