Apr. 5th, 2008 07:09 pmWell, that was good wasn't it?
I really liked that episode, it was so so funny. At the beginning I was holding my breath, but that didn't last all that long because then I was practically screaming at them, especially when Donna and the Doctor were only a street away from each other, and when they were both in the office, doing exactl the same and bobbing up and down! Argh! Maddeningly frustrating.
I did also think that this was probably the kind of thing that Sarah Jane did for a long time, and how she and Donna will get on. I think there's gonna be a bit of a cat fight, some friction, there maybe. Rose and Sarah Jane got on, Martha can get on with anybody, and Jack will get on far too well with everybody, but Donna is a touch older than Rose and Martha and I'm not sure whether they'll see a bit of themselves in each other and like each other or despise each other for their differences [and similarities.]
But when they finally noticed each other!!! That was FREAKING HILARIOUS! I got that the people they were meant to be watching were actually watching them before Donna did, mainly because of the way the Doctor just stopped and also because what she was mouthing and motioning ceased to make sense to us-- my Dad is rubbish at reading lips, so we were translating what they were saying to each other, so it was pretty clear to us when we were meant to stop caring about what exactly Donna was trying to say and notice the rest of the world again. Something she should have done slightly faster.
That journalist was interesting- great suspense in the bathroom scene, and I thought it was nice to have the contrast with someone that wouldn't be a good companion really-- she really should have just got out of there like the Doctor said. I also liked that Miss Foster had a sonic pen, if only or a little while- sometimes the sonic screwdriver seems to be able to anything and everything, and it was good to give it some competition.
The Adipose were so cute! I kinda wanted to cuddle them. When the were born without killing a person I thought the were rather lovely. And I thought it was great when Donna noticed how the Doctor had changed and that Martha had helped him, because she did, she really did. And that moment when he was explaining to an empty TARDIS, that was heart-breaking, and that he was so resigned suggested it wasn't the first time. [I do that too, sometimes I glance over to where my brother should be sitting if something funny and/or awesome happens to talk to him or just exhange glances, or to read something out loud to or something, and then I realise he isn't there. Its really rather nice to have him around at the moment.]
And when Donna said "you asked me..." and the Doctor was like "hmmm... what?" or whatever, like he didn't really remember, but it was something that Donna had clearl clung to and pinned all her hopes on, that was almost tragic. But they have great banter, and I loved the bit when she had all her suitcases packed- Martha and Rose just went with him, and it was so not what the Doctor was used to or expecting. But I thought it said a lot about Donna- not just that she is even less capable of packing light than I am, but that she had been so so certain that she would meet the Doctor again that she was ready, that she had prepared by doing something like seriously packing, that was how certain she was. And also, that she had had all that time, all that time without the Doctor but with that certainty, that faith, that she would meet him again. It wasn't, it couldn't be, a spur of the moment decision for her but she spent all that time waiting and making sure that when it did happen she was prepared for when she found him again.
And when the Doctor was all a bit shocked by her suitcases and enthusiasm, I kinda thought maybe he was also a little shocked that she wanted to be with him so much- especially since both Jack and Martha both decided to leave. And he was all adorable about how he just wanted a friend, a real companion, and worrying that somone else might be falling in love with him, someone slightly crazy as well, and Donna just isn't attracted to him like that. Lovely lovely lovely.
I thought that Donna's Mum and Gramps were great- it was so great when her mum had complained that he was always up the hill, but then later ws like "go up the hill"- such great characterisation. And I thought it was great when Donna mentioned not just the Titanic over Buckingham Palace but that the bees had been disappearing and the Doctor hadn't known- that is the kind of creepy thing that when it happens I start thinking "OK, that's really strange.... Doctor? Anyone?" That worrying, slightly "So long and thanks for all the fish" thing, like maybe the bees knew something we didn't. That slightly creeping sensation as you try not to worry that its a relatively sneaky, anticlimatic beginning of the end of life on earth.... But that's exactly the kind of thing I would have mentioned to the Doctor too, so that made me grin even more widely.
The cartoon-y bit when Miss Foster fell was a little random but I thought it was kinda funny, or a least an ok way to make an evil Mary Poppins character falling to her death slightly more comically and interesting. The only thing that I would have liked would have been a throwaway line about who those random security guards were- were they human? Adipose? Mind controlled? I thought their presence as kinda generic goons could have been justified very simply, so the fact that they didn't really bother left a tiny crack. But it was a good, fun episode so I don't really mind.
And now I suppose the only thing I have left to talk about is Rose, poor, lovely Rose. I didn't think she would turn up just yet, but as soon as we saw the back of her head we knew and my brother actually went "Hello, Rose." to her lovely blonde tresses before she turned around. And she looked so miserable, maybe angry, maybe bitter, maybe tired- I think she was doing the same as Donna, but with drastically less successful results. A real contrast there between Rose and Donna- the both really wanted to get back to the Doctor, and I don't think either of them would have given up, even after a year or so. But the Doctor has stopped looking fo Rose- he might have used a star to say goodbye to her, and he was deeply connected to her, he loved her. But he's 904, and if nothing else, he, and y'know, Jack, know loss intimately. Deeply. And, he has Rose's life to help him mourn, help him accept that she is/was gone- when he could tell Jack that she was still alive that sheer joy that she wasn't dead, that she had lived, that would be a powerful help in comparison to the pain of losing the Master [though, no one believes he/she isn't gonna turn up again, surely?] and even Astrid. So, its forgivable that he isn't obsessing over Rose still. But the way he said "Still lost." about Rose to Donna, so softly, and it sounded kinda off hand, yet also like it was something that was never far from his mind... So poor poor Rose, still fighting to go back to him.
So, I'm thinking there are three options with Rose. Either shes gonna come back essentially the same- I mean, she'll be different, but still plucky, fun and in love with the Doctor, still the same person. Or she'll come back kinda evil- and there's a lot of ways that could play out frankly, an awful lot- pretending not to be and then betraing everthing, wanting to hurt the Doctor, wanting the be with him but hating all the other people, or just kinda generically hurt!bitter!evil!Rose. Or, she could be an entirely different Rose, from a third dimension/universe. We'll see. I trust you RTD, I trust you.
Whatever they decide to do with series, I think this was a great start, and I can't wait for more!!
And, as always, the next episode looks good- Pompeii on volcano day!
