Torchwood Reset Reaction and Review
Feb. 20th, 2008 07:12 pmSo, its been a week, and my opinion about the end of Reset has ebbed and flowed and completely changed direction several times, but now, just before the next episode, I wanna talk about the rest of the episode, not just the end of it.
I adore Martha Jones. To me, she proves that Gwen is weird and annoying, because Martha is simply wonderful, and Rose was loved by like, everyone, and you know, I am also one of the rare peopel that think Donna is great. I thought Astrid was lovely, I thought Sarah Jane was wonderful, hell, I like Yvonne for crying out loud. Not only can these people write well, not only can they make strong female characters that I love, but they can do it more than once, more than twice, and they are all so different. So, to me, this proves that they must have meant for Gwen to be kinda irritating and rubbish, because it surely isn't a lack of skill. Anyway, this episode really highlights how much more I like Martha than I like Gwen, because they are actually in the same show together. Which is great.
I love how Ianto is all casually reaading a magazine and leaning against the counter, "We're closing" before he sees her ID and straightens up, so lovely. Though I had totally forgotten that bit at the beginning with Owen and Tosh and a Weevil that seemed lost. I would like to point out that as soon as Martha turns up, Gwen is defensive but Martha smiles and lights up the room.
Have I mentioned that I like Martha a lot more than Gwen?
She technically spent less time with Jack than Gwen has, yet she knows him so much better, can flirt back and tease him, is so much more comfortable in Jack's presence-- a bond of the Doctor, something shared, something gained, something that none of the other Torchwood team have between them.
And she's so much more professional than Owen! Delightful!
End of the world survivors club! And that wonderful jawline that we all yearn for. Yes, everyone misses the Doctor, always and forever, a little bit more than a little more. And I love that he got her a job! So considerate.
And then the beginning of the red cap conversation. Lovely.
Gwen gets nosy and jealous-- yet somehow wonderful Martha is still friendly and makes the little convo much less stressy and weird. Owen is trying to impress her-- nearly at the expense of beautiful Ianto, but meh, its kinda funny. Then Owen joins up with Gwen on the gently questioning Martha about who she is-- and whether she has had sex with Jack. Which of course, is all anyone really cares about, so y'know, fair enough.
Who'd assasinate a student? ...Student loans company?
Cool plot line by the way- clinical trials and weird medicine and all this doctor/Doctor links. The lavae are creepy-- its not really an original idea, but its presented well, with the whole Reset drug, the too good to be true thing that generally is. I dunno why that guy thinks the government can trump Torchwood though, that Whitehall ahs any juridiction over them. I'm sure that before the battle of Canary Wharf nothing like Whitehall would ever have got in their way. Oh how times change. Some more plot related stuff that I don't really have time for right now, and Jack hints about the Year the Never Was a couple more times, and then.
The conversation between Martha and Ianto. *smiles* Excellent.
It starts out so professionally. And then... somehow, not so much. Oh those UNIT caps- I love how Ianto seems surprised- whether at Jack for talking about them with Martha, or for Martha for talking about how Jack has talked to her with him, or actually at what martha is saying, and then he is clearly trying to make some kind of quick clean escape. Then he laughs just a little, a nervous, ohmigodwhat laugh and tries to sound cool and unaffected, when he was totally not expecting that. So. Adorable. He's clearly a bit unsure, a bit uncomfortable, maybe he's a bit unsure of what the relationship actually is, but then gets more confident or at least, more into remembering when describing their sex life. And then he zones out a little before snapping back! Seriously, must be one of the best scenes ever written ever.
At this point I have watched this scene over so many times that I need to skip forward like 15 minutes [so I don't miss the Brits], but theres a bunch of plot-- oh hang on, theres a lovely bit of Owen and Tosh, which I want to say once again, is a great pairing, so sweet and wonderful and this scene is so beautiful, almost achingly so, its lovely and believable and fragile and gorgeous. Ok, skipping forward again now, though would like to point out that Martha is totally wearing an advanced iris cam- thats not alien tech, its fairy tech! Ahem.
So, some stuff happens, and we rejoin our heros when Martha is tied down and Jack is talking about shutting down the facility to the evil guy while Owen uses the weird things to save Martha. Which seems a tad contrived but whatever. And so it is now, now that the normal ending, the convenient end, is changed.
The actors make the characters as shocked as we are-- Ianto jerks and Tosh gapes, and most telling of all perhaps, is that Jack actually hestitates.
They, and we, are left staring, shocked and not understanding and horrified.
And the trailer for the next one, on in a little less than two hours, looks awesome and awful.
