So EV asked me some more questions.

1. Do you have a song you claim to hate but that is actually your guilty pleasure? If so, what song?

My music taste is wide ranging, and I enjoy a lot of mainstream music and cheesy pop music WITHOUT SHAME, so it's difficult for me to come up with a guilty pleasure per se. People have made me feel guilty about my music taste in the past, but to those people I say NO MORE. If I'm not ashamed of my kinks, I'm not going to be ashamed of liking Avril Lavigne or whatever.

However, there is music that part of me likes, and another part of me hates and feels angry at and ashamed for liking. These are songs where, generally, the song as a tune or as a whole just appeals somehow, even though I dislike or am upset by a single composite part of it. For example, I am good at picking up and remembering lyrics, and since becoming a feminist I have become far more aware of and sensitive to misogynistic lyrics than I have been before. So this means that sometimes there are songs that I can hate the lyrics of, because they are misogynistic or homophobic or just plain stupid or meaningless or whatever, but the song still appeals to me, because it has a killer hook or whatever.

An example of this is Katy Perry's ET - a song with IMO has no artistic merit, and lyrics that I actually find abhorrent, but that goddamn hook is so catchy. And I want to sing along, but the lyrics are horrible, and I basically end up cringing and singing simultaneously while hating myself and feeling kinda dirty. Oh Katy Perry, your brand sends me such confusing mixed messages.

On the other hand, there are also songs that I feel vaguely guilty about enjoying because I feel like I should be more repulsed than I actually am. Like Eminem's Stan. Which has pretty horrifying content I suppose, but it is just a masterpiece to me, and makes me come out in goosebumps.
2. Do you think best friend romance relationships work out?
Well, they certainly can! As with all things, generalisations aren't really all that helpful to apply to specific examples of individuals. I am reminded of that particular asofterworld comic, which has been remixed with Mark and Eduardo also, that says "Sex doesn't ruin friendships. People ruin friendships." It's all about individuals and whether and how they work together, and other things aren't that relevant I think.
Practically speaking, I think a successful romantic relationship, whatever the prior relationship between the people involved, will evolve so that the people in the romantic relationship will build a very strong friendship between themselves.
Also, I dislike this idea of relationships "working out" because ideas of true love lasting forever is rubbish IMO. Some relationships don't last forever, or don't last for very long, or aren't perfectly happy and roses and kittens while they are going on, but still involve real love, real good. Life isn't binary, and relationships aren't either totally perfect and forever or somehow worthless mistakes. Plenty of relationships work for a time, and then no longer work, and them no longer working doesn't somehow invalidate the part, the time, the work, the love that was the first part of the relationship.

3. Which same sex historical figures do you think belong in each other's arms? (AKA what is the OTP of world history?)

Um. Wow. Well, I used to ship Byron/everyone, does that count. My friend A and I particularly shipped Byron/Captain Jack Harkness for a while actually, lol. I like canon/actual historical gay couples when I have come across them (Oscar Wilde, oh my heart) and rumoured /unconfirmed ones (I think James I had a pretty epic thing with Buckingham, didn't he?) but I suppose I just don't know enough history to really have specific shipping opinions, lol.

I guess there's always Caesar/everyone too :P

4. Is there a colour you wear to feel confident?

Not really, but I do have go to outfits that I know look good on me and there are colours I favour. I love teal. Lots of blue and green and black and grey in my life. I have bought a disproportionate amount of purple and orange in the last two years. I wish I had more red in my wardrobe.

5. What's something (book, media etc) everyone is gaga about and you simply cannot understand their obsession with it?

RED VINES

TASTE ONLY OF DISAPPOINTMENT

They didn't even taste sweet ffs. So gross.

There are the things I've not actually had any contact with - I've never watched an episode of Supernatural, I've never read The Hunger Games, I've never seen all of a Star Wars film, I've never had a peanut and "jelly" ie jam sandwich, so I can't connect the hype to anything and thus can't really make sense of it. Then there are things where I have the same exposure as others but they've drawn other conclusions to me; I don't understand why everyone else - fictional and marm fish alike! - seem to love the Goblin Market so much. I either haven't read or haven't liked a lot of fic apparently by BNFs. I don't like werewolves all that much, except in Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

Oh yeah, and. KINKS. YKINMK and that's ok, but I seriously do not get the obsession with spanking. Does absolutely nothing for me, and I find the word kinda silly, the way it can be written ...odd ("Smack! Smack!" ?! ) I can never really get my head around the set up and just generally, yeah, it baffles me and gets kinda tiresome. It seems to contaminate almost all other types of BDSM fic scenes. So. Annoying.

Yeah, um. ET. I honestly can't stand Katy Perry's songs (and I'm completely unable to tell them apart, which I guess is kind of like what happens to me with Maroon 5), but I loved this one YouTube video, and then ET was the song, and it rubbed off on me. Sadly enough. :-/ And I get you about the lyrics; there's this one song whose tune is catchy and cheerful, and one line that says 'like a model, perfection above the rest' and I cannot stand that line, I hate it so, so much. I probably shouldn't leave a rant about America's materialistic and vain and vapid nature in the comments of your post though...

Can't. Stop. Singing. Along. To Don't You Want Me. ;___; It's the worst.

Seriously, what is it about you and red vines? RED VINES ARE SUPER DELICIOUS OKAY. Maybe it just wasn't a lucky day for red vines when you tried them, or you got a bunch of bad ones which also happens, but I swear they have the potential to be really, really yummy.

I'm... not hearing the misogyny in Don't You Want Me? *listens harder* *just loves Darren's voice*

Play and I were at Lal's house. Lal was sent some Red Vines from one of her lovely American friends. WE WERE ALL REALLY EXCITED. And we tried them. And we all agreed that they were tasteless and not awesome and kinda horrible, and then we felt sad. AND THAT IS THE STORY.

It's not misogynistic so much as fucking stalkerish. I HATE IT. Darren's voice though omg, I can't hear the lyrics over the awesome that is Darren Criss!

Oh hang on, we are talking about American food thingies, not actual vines as in fruit, are we? HAHAHA OH MAN. Look at my ignorance. :DDD I think I've tried something not Red Vines but pretty close to it, and I agree that their taste is rather... non-descript.
