Diaspora*

Over the last year, I have fallen out of love with facebook.

I still go on it every day, because I do still like my friends and it is useful, but I resent facebook. There doesn't seem to be much of an alternative around. This annoys me. Bebo was eaten by MySpace, and MySpace was sucked dry by facebook, but there it seems to have stopped. Perhaps because the whole idea of "social networking" got old - Twitter and tumblr and other places have blown up offering something very different, and facebook stays dominant in a world where there are no longer any natural competing predators.

Whatever. Azz pointed out that Diaspora* is a baby site, basically trying to be facebook but with decent privacy options as far as I can see so far. I am at the cautiously poking it stage. I can't tell whether it will be "the next big thing" or just another flop in the sea of the internet. It's still in private alpha, so no one is there. Yet, I hope.

It has an optional type box for "gender". It might be good.

My point is, would anyone like an invite code and come poke it a bit with me?

I haven't heard of diaspora, and when I just googled it I got a wikipedia entry and hackney council. But why not?

Lulz it's wiki entry is under 'Diaspora (social network)'. Email address?

I'd actually forgotten I'd heard about it.

But I'm sort of intrigued. Could I have an invite? :)

Sure! I need an email address to send it to :)

windscreenviper@gmail.com Thanks! :D

Also, I'm now sitting here listening to cheesy 90 songs thanks to you and your Eiffel 65. :P

Done!

I warn you, it's pretty boring so far. But at least if it does become huge, I can be all smug that I got in on the ground floor.

Eiffel 65 was just on the radio at the time, but I do like it more than I should probably admit to!

Ohh new shiny? Yespls :) cerys@cerysjones.co.uk
I, too, am growing disenchanted with facebook, so this could either be the start of something new or it could reinforce why facebook is currently the only thing that does what it does (do you actually need more than one "social network"? surely that defeats the point? *thoughts*)

Hey. Isi had an idea for like, a Fish invite chain. So I'm inviting you, and if you could invite the next person down that'd be awesome. :)

I have been disenchanted with facebook for a while now. If you still have invite codes, I'd like one! karisha[dot]marie[at]gmail[dot]com

I am slow to change and a bit rubbish at social networking anyway, but new things are shiny and if I get one and then it becomes huge I would like to be able to smugly say 'yeah dudes, got there AGES ago'. So if you have any invite codes left then sure, I would like. :) hanelisarnur@yahoo.co.uk

Love!
